“Fair working beyond Smart working – work less, but better, for everyone.” by Marco Crescenzi

In this piece, Marco Crescenzi launches Fair working, a fair and supportive vision of Smart working, asking himself whether it is possible to “work less, but better, for everyone“. He does so through the exhibition of international research of great interest and a more strictly managerial final analysis.

In a hyper-connected but often unproductive “burnout society”, with redundant processes that reduce working times, with the need of being more effective, with problems – especially for women – of double work and family load, and millions of people unemployed, the old model of the “eight hours” seems a residue of the past.

The paper deals with the theme of work from different perspectives. While they might seem incompatible, in the end, they all converge fully: from an existential perspective (too many hours), to sociological research (international experiences on work/productivity) to a managerial one (how to work less but more effectively).

In the end, the stimulus launched by Marco Crescenzi to managers and HRMs in the sector, as well as to all the workers in the Third Sector, is: “The non-profit must be an example to overcome the intoxicating “smart working” model, for a smart and efficient Fair working“, which will be good for workers, trade unions, managers and boards of organizations.
